Dr. Alana Cook
I am a Registered Psychologist with the College of Psychologists of British Columbia. Like many psychologists, I like to do a lot of different things. I mainly provide therapy and assessment services in an around Vancouver, BC - including here at Boreal Wellness Centres - but I also spend my time consulting on matters like mental health and violence risk, conducting research, teaching, and writing articles and books. It is important to me to invest my time in many kinds of activities because it allows me to transfer my knowledge and experience across these areas.
In my clinical work, I provide therapy and assessment across a wide-range of challenges including depression, anxiety, trauma, anger, and substance use disorders. I also work with people experiencing psychotic and bipolar disorders and problematic personality traits. I have a particular interest working with people struggling with interpersonal or workplace conflict.
It is important to me to be empathic, genuine, straightforward, and collaborative in my approach to therapy. I mainly use a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) framework for treatment, but I bring in elements of other evidence-based treatments depending on the needs and goals of my clients (e.g., mindfulness, CPT, DBT). I find most my clients view my approach as responsive, transparent, validating, and helpful.
I have a PhD in Clinical-Forensic Psychology from Simon Fraser University and completed a pre-doctoral residency at St.Joseph’s Healthcare/McMaster University in Ontario and a post-doctoral fellowship through the Mental Health, Law, and Policy Institute at Simon Fraser University.
