Here’s how we are helping our clients thrive
“Being a veteran of 12 years in the military and two tours in Afghanistan I have taken a few programs over the years to deal with PTSD and mental health issues … Without a doubt the group-based program at Boreal Wellness was exactly what I needed this time … The complete body, mind and spirit approach taken by all the staff was key for me and was not something I had experienced in other programs. The follow up aftercare has helped to monitor my goals and continuing treatment as well. All the staff – from the Doctors, counselors, personal trainers, nutritionists, and administrators were very engaging, knowledgeable, professional and caring. I truly felt like they were honestly invested in my health and well being. I would highly recommend this program to anyone wanting to live a more positive, productive lifestyle and that wants to work towards that goal with like minded individuals.”

“It’s been a while since I checked in. Things are going very well with me. I feel fully back in the swing of life with a renewed understanding of myself. I was reflecting on where I was a year ago today. That was when I was in the middle of the program at Boreal. I learned so much from that experience and wanted to let you know how thankful I am that I was a part of that. I learned so much from both the group and the staff - all amazing people … The key thing for me was truly accepting myself, my feelings, my needs, my blessings, my challenges and being okay with whatever happens. I don’t know exactly quite how to explain it … I am totally comfortable again just staring at the fireplace and doing nothing - go figure.”
“For my entire 20s and 30s, I thought my severe anxiety was just something I had to “live with” – and when it became so unbelievably severe in my early 40s that it “took over” my life, I became a miserable, worrying mess. When I walked into Boreal on day one of the 7-week program, I had huge doubts and reservations. But after a few weeks of learning (and practicing) the skills taught by their team of compassionate and devoted professionals, something “nothing short of miraculous” started to occur – I began to win the battle over my anxiety! It wasn’t easy (and I still have to apply and work hard at these skills each and every day), but I now am a much happier and more confident person than I had ever thought was possible!”
“After surviving a critical illness I found myself not only needing to recover physically but mentally; depression became overwhelming for me. From the first telephone call I made to Boreal I no longer felt alone in my journey through depression. I didn’t win the battle in 7 weeks but I got a big boost in the right direction and I still have Boreal walking my journey right beside me.”

“I attended their 7 week group day program, which I was concerned about because I am a very private person. However, everyone attending was there for the same reason, to better themselves and on days that I would be thinking that no one can possibly understand my pain I need only to look at my fellow group members and listen to their stories to recognize that my burdens and pain were shared. I am so thankful for my group members and all the exceptional multidisciplinary professionals that are now part of my mental health team.”

“The medical, spiritual, mental well-being and cognitive behavioural therapy approaches is what made Boreal Wellness Centre a 5/5 review and is highly recommended.”

“Last year I sank into a major depression. I couldn’t work, eat or sleep. I discovered that the medical system does not work quickly. Efforts to find a psychologist and/or a psychiatrist in a timely manner failed … After being ill for seven months … I needed something intense and structured … I thought I was not a “group therapy” person, but I discovered the power of group therapy. Being with others who are going through very similar things to you works, especially in combination with individual therapy … I am back at my profession full-time. I have learned so much and am much happier … I recommend this program whole heartedly to anyone suffering from serious depression. Don’t wait – they can help you learn the tools required to help yourself live a full, rich life.”
"Early this spring, after 22 years working frontline policing, I was involved in a traumatic shooting in which an individual took his own life. After this fateful evening my life took a drastic turn and I found myself in a very dark place! The dark place took over my world and had a profound effect on my husband and children. I was fortunate to be provided the opportunity, with the assistance of WorkSafeBC, to participate in the first cohort of the First Responder Trauma Outpatient program at Boreal Wellness. The 10 week journey of physical, psychological and emotional discovery with Boreal has provided me the opportunity to return to work and finish my career in policing. The journey was tough and emotionally gut wrenching at times but perseverance and determination conquers all!!! I proudly wear my battle scars on the outside for all to see! I can only hope other first responders who live in the very dark world of PTSD are strong enough to take the journey of self care and wellness with the support of Boreal! Forever Grateful! "

"I attended one of the first 2 day/week trauma programs for military, fire, police, & first responders. I was surprised at how emotionally drained I felt and would suggest being open to taking time off work in order to focus on getting the most out of the program. I liked how it was an educational program coupled with individual counseling sessions to work on the deeper traumas. The program had a small number of people, approachable staff, great food, and provided a lot of valuable tools to become aware of how to live a healthier life and make changes. Trauma yoga, fitness, and nutrition courses in this program were helpful in finding a new routine and balance in my daily life. Since returning to work, I feel more equipped to deal with triggers and was grateful to have taken this time to heal. I would recommend this course to anyone."

"I have been an emergency frontline social worker for 5+ years, on and off reserve where I have witnessed many horrific things that resulted in me obtaining PTSD and going on leave from my employment. I was quite alone, lost and feeling alienated after taking a leave from work. I felt like no one could ever possibly understand what I was going through and how lost I was. That was until I met the staff and the clients at Boreal Wellness Center. Everybody was so friendly, welcoming and warm and I felt normal for once. I felt like I was with my ‘people’ who actually understand me no matter whether they were police, firefighters or veterans - we all understand each other and we all connected together in a strong lifelong bond. I also felt like the counsellors cared for our wellbeing very deeply. The program layout was magnificent. I really enjoyed all of the aspects because it encompassed every area of one’s overall well- being. So a dietician would come in, we would have trauma focused yoga, we would exercise outside, we would have a group, we would meet with a psychologist weekly and a back-to-work specialist. It felt like a home away from home and I feel truly blessed to have received the treatment and support at Boreal and the ongoing after care groups where I can maintain contact with the awesome fun counsellor and people in my group; as well as many new people from other cohorts! As we are all in this together and we all have one common goal - healing our PTSD with the help and support of one another and the people at Boreal Wellness. "
