About Depression

Depression is a common psychological disorder characterized by sad, low, or irritable mood.  Depression is often accompanied by physical and mental health changes that limit a person’s ability to effectively function in their family life, social life or at work.

It’s important to note that a brief period of sadness is not a mood disorder nor is it necessarily depression. Depression lasts for weeks or longer and involves low or flat mood most of the day, nearly every day.  Depression often results in diminished interest or pleasure in all or most activities, including activities that previously brought joy or happiness. Other symptoms that often accompany depression include difficulties with concentration, insomnia, loss of appetite, significant changes in body weight, reduced energy levels or fatigue. Individuals with depression may also experience intense feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, and recurrent or persistent dark thoughts, including suicidal ideation.

Treatment using evidence-based cognitive behavioural therapy, regular exercise, dietary changes, and medication (if appropriate) can help people with depression to learn how to better manage symptoms and improve the overall quality of their lives.

Resilient Living™
Day Treatment Program

Our Resilient LivingTM Day Treatment Program is group therapy for people with moderate or moderate-severe anxiety and/or depression.

Schedule and Curriculum

The Resilient Living™ Day Treatment group meets three days per week for seven weeks (20 clinical days). This schedule allows our clients to live at home and experience the challenges of daily life while implementing skills, tools and support from the Boreal Wellness Centres clinical team.

Each day in this program consists of five group sessions, each 60 minutes in length.

Topics covered in this cognitive behavioural (CBT) focused program include:

  • understanding how to change negative patterns of thinking
  • how to avoid mind traps
  • understanding and managing emotions
  • importance of behavioural activation
  • managing relationships
  • mindfulness
  • fitness
  • nutrition
  • medication education and management (optional, depending on client need)
  • managing and overcoming return to work barriers (if appropriate)

Clients complete the Resilient Living™ Day Treatment Program with the same cohort of 6-10 people to ensure the most therapeutic environment.

Additional Features

The Resilient LivingTM Day Treatment Program is accompanied by:

  • A 45-minute lunch break, where a catered meal is served.
  • Six months of aftercare (one-hour group sessions) led by a registered clinical counsellor (RCC).
  • Individual therapy, family therapy, and substance use therapy (as needed and/or requested).

Resilient Living™ Evening Program

Overview

Our Resilient LivingTM Evening Program is group therapy for people with moderate or moderate-severe anxiety and/or depression.

Schedule and Curriculum

The Resilient Living™ Evening Program meets twice a week for 3 hours for 10 weeks. Our Evening Program can be a stand-alone treatment program, or it can be used as a step-down to continue the momentum achieved during the Day Treatment Program.

Each evening has two hours of group psychotherapy and the third hour is a rotation of nutrition, fitness, and medication education and management (optional, depending on client need).

The curriculum in the Evening Program is very similar to that of the Day Treatment Program. Topics covered in this cognitive behavioural (CBT) focused program include:

  • understanding how to change negative patterns of thinking
  • how to avoid mind traps
  • understanding and managing emotions
  • importance of behavioural activation
  • managing relationships
  • mindfulness
  • fitness
  • nutrition
  • medication education and management (optional, depending on client need)
  • managing and overcoming return to work barriers (if appropriate)

Resilient Living™
Virtual Program

Overview

Our Resilient LivingTM Virtual Treatment Program is group therapy for people with moderate or moderate-severe anxiety and/or depression.  This program is delivered using secure video conference technology, which makes it accessible to people living anywhere in British Columbia.

Schedule and Curriculum

The Resilient Living™ Virtual Treatment Program consists of twenty sessions, each 2 hours in length, over 7 weeks. Our Virtual Treatment Program can be a stand-alone treatment program or used as a step-down to continue momentum achieved during the Day Treatment Program.

The two-hour sessions are a combination of group psychotherapy, mindfulness and a rotation of nutrition, fitness and medication education.

The curriculum in the Virtual Treatment Program is similar to the Day Treatment and Evening Treatment Programs. Topics covered in this cognitive behavioural (CBT) focused program include:

  • understanding how to change negative patterns of thinking
  • how to avoid mind traps
  • understanding and managing emotions
  • importance of behavioural activation
  • managing relationships
  • mindfulness
  • fitness
  • nutrition
  • medication education
